My teacher gives me good grades.   Mi profesora me da buenas notas.

They give a lot of money to charity.   Dan mucho dinero a la  caridad.

The bank gave us a loan.   El banco nos dió un préstamo.

She has given me her book.    Me ha dado su libro.

They are giving us more time.   Nos están dando mas tiempo.

El verbo give es utilizado  en varios verbos compuestos o frasales

Verbos Compuestos  (Frasales)   Los mas comunmente utilizados en el ingles americano son:

give up   …rendirse

give in  …dejarse  convencer, ceder bajo insistencia

give away   …regalar algo que ya no quieres, dar algo gratis  (muchas veces a un desconocido)

give back   …devolver

Vocabulario:  present (regalo),   gift (regalo),    card (tarjeta)   flowers (flores)

Usamos present o gift indistintamente para decir regalo u obsequio.

Christmas present/gift    regalo de Navidad

birthday present/gift    regalo de cumpleaños

Pero el significado de gift es más amplio.  Incluye:

algo dado sin pago, que muestra honor, o favor en una ocasión,

o como un gesto de asistencia, como una donación.

También significa: un don, o talento

to give   …dar, regalar

He always gives her flowers on Valentines Day.  Él siempre le da flores en el día de San Valentín.

I love the gift that you gave me.  Me encanta el regalo que me diste.

Has she given you an answer?  Te ha dado una respuesta?

What can we give them?    ¿Que podemos regalarlos?

I think you should give her some flowers.   Creo que deberías darle flores.

Are you giving him a present?   Le estas dando un regalo?

I just gave him a card.    Solo le di una tarjeta.

If you have time, give me a call.    Si tienes tiempo, llámame.

Do you think the bank would give us a loan?   ¿Crees que el banco nos daría un préstamo?

The money that I gave you was a gift.    El dinero que te di fue un regalo.

to give away   …regalar algo que no quieres, dar algo gratis

I’m giving away my old clothes.   Estoy regalando  mi ropa vieja.

They are giving these books away.  Están dando estos libros de regalo.

I don’t think you should give that away; you could sell it.    Creo que no deberías regalar eso; lo podrías vender.

I wouldn’t give that away if I were you.    Yo no regalaría eso si fuera tu.

Did you give away your sofa?   ¿Regalaste tu sofá?

I gave it away yesterday.   Lo regalé ayer.

You should have told me that you were giving it away.  Me deberías haber dicho que lo estabas regalando.

They are giving away free samples at the supermarket.   Están dando muestras gratis en el supermercado.

to give up  …rendirse, dejar de intentar, darse por vencido

Don’t give up. No te rindas.

I will never give up. Nunca me rendiré.

Some people just give up.  Alguna gente simplemente se rinde.

We haven’t given up. No nos hemos rendido.

He gave up after one try. Se rindió después de un intento.

I’m giving up.  Me estoy rindiendo.

to give in  …ceder a la insistencia

My mother wouldn’t give in.    Mi madre no cedía.

She finally gave in, and let us go to the party.   Por fin cedió, y nos dejó ir a la fiesta.

to give back   …devolver

Give it back to me.  Devuélvemelo.

I already gave it back to you.  Ya te lo devolví.

When can you give it back to me?   ¿Cuándo me lo puedes devolver?

I’ll give it back to you tomorrow.    Te lo devolveré mañana.

GIVE AWAY  y  GIVE BACK    son separables.

Se puede decir:

I gave away my clothes.

o

I gave my clothes away.

I’ll give back the car tomorrow.

o

I’ll give the car back tomorrow.

Pero, si utilizamos un pronombre,en vez de un sustantivo,

el pronombre tiene que ir entre el verbo y la partícula.

I gave them away.

I’ll give it back tomorrow.
