Hablar … Talk, Speak

Los 2 significan hablar, y a veces son intercambiables, pero no en todos los casos, así que es bueno saber cuál usar.

Los 2 significan:

*espresarse con palabras

Es preferible usar talk en estos ejemplos:

The baby is learning to talk.

Does your parrot talk? ¿Habla tu loro?

Usa speak para dirigir la palabra, como cuando se da un discurso.

Who will speak at our graduation? ¿Quién hablará en nuestra graduación?

*conversar

Ambos significan conversar, y se puede usar cualquiera de los 2, pero como una guía general:

Usa talk para una conversación más informal,

We talk on the phone every night.

y speak para una conversación mas formal o seria.

I will speak to your teacher tomorrow. Hablaré con tu profesor mañana.

*hablar un idioma

Cuando se trata de hablar un idioma, siempre se usa speak

He doesn’t speak Spanish. Él no habla español.

(No se pronuncia la L en talk)

to talk …hablar, charlar, conversar

Talk es un verbo regular talk/talked/talked

speak … hablar, dar una charla

Speak es irregular speak/spoke/spoken

Las preposiciones mas utilizadas con talk y speak son: to, with, about

decimos:

talk to, speak to

Hablaré con el dueno.

I will talk to the owner.

I will speak to the owner.

talk with, speak with

I will talk with the owner.

I will speak with the owner.

to o with? ¿Cuál debes usar? Seguramente ‘with’ implica mas intercambio de palabras. Sin embargo en el ingles americano usamos TO con más frecuencia, porque  se supone que habrá diálogo. Los 2 son correctos.

talk about hablar de, sobre

We talked about the weather. Hablamos sobre el tiempo.

The president spoke about the economy. El presidente habló sobre la economía.

Vocabulario: owner (dueño), manager (gerente), trip (viaje), language (idioma)

The languages: En ingles se escriben los nombres de los idiomas con letra mayúscula.

Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Japanese

Las Frases

He puesto un asterisco en las oraciones en las que sería aceptable intercambiar talk y speak,

pero lo que usé en la oración es la mejor opción.

to talk

Kathy talks too much. Kathy habla demasiado.

Let’s talk about the trip. Hablemos del viaje.

We don’t talk much. No conversamos mucho.

*We talked about the trip. Hablamos sobre el viaje.

We haven’t talked about it yet. Todavia no hemos hablado de ello.

We’re talking about selling the house. Estamos hablando de vender la casa.

We talked about it all night. Hablamos de ello toda la noche.

I talked to the owner about the problem with the water. Conversé con el dueño sobre el problema con el agua.

*I’ll talk to him about it. Hablaré con él sobre eso.

*I will talk to the children about the noise. … Hablaré con los niños sobre el ruido.

She wouldn’t quit talking. No dejaba de hablar.

What are you talking about? ¿De qué hablas?

to speak

I want to speak to a manager. Quiero hablar con un gerente.

I think you should speak to the person in charge. Creo que deberías hablar con la persona encargada.

They asked me to speak at the graduation. Me pideron que hable en la graduación.

Could you speak more slowly please? ¿Podría hablar mas despacio por favor?

Have you spoken to your sister? ¿Has hablado con tu hermana?

She won’t speak to me. No me habla.

We haven’t spoken in a long time. No hemos hablado desde hace mucho tiempo.

We spoke on the phone last night. Hablamos por teléfono anoche.

phone calls …llamadas telefónicas

Cuando hablamos por teléfono, muchas veces es con desconocidos, y usamos un ingles formal:

Who’s speaking? ¿Quién habla?

With whom am I speaking? Con quien hablo?

May I speak to Mr Logan please.

I don’t know if you remember, we spoke on Monday. No se si Ud. recuerda, hablamos el lunes.

What language do you speak? Que idioma habla usted?

Do you speak German? Habla alemán?

He speaks portuguese. El habla portugués.

They speak Italian. Ellos hablan italiano.

How many languages do you speak? ¿Cuántos idiomas hablas?

I want to learn to speak French. Quiero aprender hablar francés.

What language were they speaking? ¿Qué idioma estaban hablando?

They were speaking Japanese. Estaban hablando japonés.

He said that he speaks Italian. Dijo que habla italiano.

If I went to France, I would have to learn to speak French. Si fuera a Francia, tendría que aprender hablar francés.
